It was one of those trips.
Hopping to Manhattan last week for more pleasure than business (although, in my case, who can tell?), my plus-one and I made like aliens from Woody Allen-land. We set up shop in Soho at 60 Thompson (down the street from one of Woody's must-gos in life and in film — Raoul's on Prince Street). We took in the show, Follies, on Broadway, which is not only a diva showdown starring both stage greats Elaine Paige and Bernadette Peters, but is, as one reviewer just weighed in, a musical revival that is about the "psychosis of nostalgia" (sign us right up!)
We made it, among other places, to The Lion, an of-the-moment glittering hordes-attracting tavern that comes with a dining room that, as The New York Times once depicted, "soars up to a stained skyline evoking Paris and the musical Rent." (Notably, the glittering hordes were much less in evidence here than on previous trips! See: dog-days-of-summer!)Where'd they have all gone? Oh, yes, "The Hamptons" — which brings me to the second phase of our trip, which was decidedly less Woody Allen, and a wee more Nancy Meyers. As Good as It Gets? Hey, certainly, not bad. Rolling over to Montauk, where we pitched a tent (metaphorically) beachside, I reveled in a particular sort of "psychosis of nostalgia," breathing in the same easy surf and loose vibe that once drew Andy Warhol, where the likes of Edward Albee once rested his head, and where more elusive thesps like Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber make nowadays sand-prints.
And, well, a funny thing happened while we taking the time to smell the roses: we ran into Anderson Cooper. "There he is!" a member of our expanded party said, pointing out the hardest-working Q-tip in the news business.
We were in Sag Harbor, yet another nesting spot for home-away-home New Yorkers for a charity benefit (benefits being as prolific in the Hamptons as hunger pangs are in Mecca during Ramadan), and it was the giggle that gave Anderson gave away.
Nah, not so. I do jest.
Although a certain giggle-fest was, naturally, on all our minds. Anderson, after all, had just coming off one of one of the more memorable weeks in his illustrious career, due not to another valiant storytelling trip to a war zone, but an all-out on-air breakdown. Gone viral — that the CNN hunk was, after he lost his youknowwhat reporting on the sage of Gerard Depardieu urinating in the cabin of an Air France jet. After one potty pun too many — "DepardTwo," anyone? — and overcome with the absurdity of the whole darn story, Cooper's hee-hees got the best of him. He finally stopped after a solid minute to tell his audience, "Sorry, this has actually never happened to me. You always see this sort of thing on YouTube, and you don't think it'd actually happen to you."
"So nice to meet the new face of giggling," I promptly told the YouTube-able anchorman when we came across one another on the patio here at Italian hot spot Tutto Il Giorno.
"Well, y'know …" he trailed off, giving me good smirk (and a shared photo-op), but nada a giggle.
Standing next to him, as if in a Times Square mirage, was the salty, flame-haired Kathy Griffin, who didn't giggle either, though she did confess. "It's my first time," she said, referring to The Hamptons.
Seriously? Your first trip?
Yup, went the comedienne.
"Where are you staying?" I then asked dutifully.
"With this guy," she said, nodding in the general direction of Anderson. Like New Year's Eve, on CNN, all over again!
(Obviously, their camaraderie extends to off-camera … isn't that just darling?)
Both temporary housemates were showing at this party for AMFAR, the amazing AIDS organization that's also all set, incidentally, to put on a big party in Toronto during the big filmfest. Will we be seeing either Anderson or Kathy then? As they so often say in TV: stay tun
